Emilia Clarke suffered life-threatening aneurysms while filming 'Game Of Thrones'

Once, she says she received a "horrific headache" at Comic-Con and thought, "This is it". She pushed through the pain, put her sneakers on and managed to get through the first few exercises. "I was suffering from a condition called aphasia, a outcome of the trauma my brain had suffered", she writes. "I tried to ignore the pain and push through it, but I just couldn't", she adds. Meanwhile, the pain - shooting, stabbing, constricting pain - was getting worse.

"At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged", Clarke recalls.

Emilia Clarke paid tribute to HBO's "Game of Thrones" in an emotional farewell Instagram post. "But, after that first day of filming, I barely made it back to the hotel before I collapsed of exhaustion".

Emilia was rushed to the nearby Whittington Hospital where an MRI, a brain scan, was performed and she was diagnosed with having had "a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain".

Though she obviously ended up earning the role, Clarke was surprised that they chose her, a self-described "short, dark-haired, curvy Brit" for a character who was described to her as "an otherworldly, bleached-blond woman of mystery" and "a blend of Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Lawrence of Arabia".

"In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug", she writes.

In the years since then, Emilia Clarke has managed to make an incredible recovery. "Why?"' Clarke writes. "In my head, I'd respond, 'How many men do I need to kill to prove myself?"'

But one day after her "safe" day, Clarke could not state her own name.

She was suffering from a condition called aphasia which luckily passed after about a week. "Please believe me: I know that I am hardly unique, hardly alone".

"I was suffering from a condition called aphasia, a outcome of the trauma my brain had suffered", she said.

She was starting to mutter nonsense as well and felt like her life was over since her 'job-my entire dream of what my life would be-centered on language, on communication.

"I spent a month in the hospital again and, at certain points, I lost all hope".

Before coming back on set, she was told that there was a smaller aneurysm on the other side of her brain that was close to popping as well.

But the pain continued, the fatigue continued, the feeling of hopelessness continued.

After Season 2, Clarke went in for a regular brain scan, and was told by the doctors that the other growth had doubled in size, and that surgery was necessary. The surgery was expected to be relatively simple, but unfortunately, the procedure failed.

"Somehow, nearly crawling, I made it to the locker room", Clarke writes. This time they needed to access my brain in the old fashioned way-through my skull.

She survived the operation, but the recovery was brutal.

"I looked as though I had been through a war more gruesome than any that Daenerys experienced", she said. It's heartbreaking that she may have felt like she had to keep this all a secret not to burden anyone, but the people most important to her (like her family) were by her side. "A reporter asked me about it, and I denied it", she said.

As she explains via Instagram, Clarke made a decision to reveal the story to bring awareness for her new charity, the Same You Organization.

Clarke has helped to develop the charity SameYou, which helps to provide treatment for people recovering from brain injuries and stroke.
