Christchurch shooting: Sajid Javid slams Australian Senator Fraser Anning over comments

Senator Fraser Anning was egged by a teenage boy during a press conference in Melbourne

In a statement released just hours after the attack, Mr Anning condemned the gunman but said that "usually (Muslims) are the perpetrators".

Britain's Home Secretary Sajid Javid has criticised an Australian Senator who appeared to suggest that Muslim immigration was the cause of a mass shooting at mosques in New Zealand that has left 49 dead.

Senator Fraser Anning has been egged at an organised event in Melbourne which saw protestors and supporters of the controversial identity clash in wild scenes.

Ruling out right-wing terrorism, gun laws or rising racism as "cliched nonsense", the independent senator added: "The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place".

He ended with a passage from the bible and said those who followed a violent religion that called on them to murder "cannot be too surprised when someone takes them at their word and responds in kind".

Among the criticism was a rebuke by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who described the statement as "disgusting".

In August, he called for a "final solution" to the Muslim "immigration problem", evoking a reference to the Nazis' "final solution" terminology used to target Jews during the Holocaust.

Although evidence of Anning sharing that statement has been removed from his social media accounts, he then wrote on his Twitter page, "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?"

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who labelled Senator Anning's comments as "disgusting", said Labor would support a parliamentary censure motion of the "rogue" Queensland senator.

"Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament", Morrison tweeted.

"By spreading hatred and turning Australians against each other he is doing exactly what the terrorists want", he said on Twitter.

I stand totally against any Muslims in our Parliament.

Calling Friday one of the country's "darkest days", New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the shootings as a "well-planned terrorist attack".

"It is heart-breaking that people, praying in a mosque, should be mowed down".
