Chiefs Release Eric Berry

Eric Berry

Within four days, the Kansas City Chiefs overhauled their defense by parting ways with their most prominent stars - outside linebacker Justin Houston, outside linebacker Dee Ford and safety Eric Berry.

Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement that Berry has been a tremendous leader for their football team and an inspiration to so many fans over the years.

Unfortunately, the last two injury-plagued seasons have also kept him from furthering that legacy, which has made this an easier decision for general manager Brett Veach when it comes to the business side of things.

Berry was limited to six games in 2014 before revealing he'd been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"I'd like to thank Eric for his contributions to our team and the Kansas City community over the last nine years", Reid said. "We wish him nothing but the best".

His teammate, Jeff Allen, wrote on Twitter, "I don't think I've ever played with someone that loves the game of football as much as Eric Berry".

The Fairburn, Ga., native, originally entered the NFL as the fifth-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Chiefs. "He's a special person, and we wish him the best as his career moves forward".

He earned five trips to the Pro Bowl in his time with the Chiefs. That was the first of four seasons in which Berry missed nearly an entire season.

Berry was able to overcome cancer and was even named the 2015 Comeback Player of the Year.

Berry's 2017 season ended after one game because of a torn Achilles tendon. He has 440 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 51 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

If Berry can return healthy to the field, he will be a nice addition for any team in need of strong leadership and dynamic play in the secondary.
