Brexit: Attorney General says backstop risk "unchanged"

An English ten Pound note is seen in an illustration

Speaking of the "legally binding changes" the United Kingdom agreed with the EU, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said earlier Tuesday that Britain had been offered "reassurance and guarantees" over the Brexit deal as MPs in London prepare to vote Tuesday on whether to accept the withdrawal agreement, but denied that the concessions brokered alterations to the so-called Irish backstop.

Both lawmakers and the public remain split between backers of a clean break from the European Union and those who favor continuing a close relationship, either through a post-Brexit trade deal or by reversing the June 2016 decision to leave.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing continued opposition to her European Union divorce deal despite "legally binding" changes that she hopes will win parliamentary support for the agreement.

While the anti-Brexiteers have continued to say they'll vote "no" and the staunch May supporters have indicated that they'll likely vote "yes", the most pivotal votes will no doubt be the ERG (a group within the Conservatives who represent the Eurosceptic of the party) and the DUP - whose influence amounts to 10 MPs.

The PM said the changes meant the Irish backstop - the insurance policy created to avoid a hard border in Ireland - could not "become permanent", the BBC wrote. If you missed it, here's a recording.

"They fail to fulfil the commitment made by Government to the House in response to the Brady amendment "to obtain legally binding changes to the withdrawal agreement".

While a few parliamentarians have intimated they will change their minds, it will probably not be enough for the government deal to pass.

If the deal is voted down, MPs will Wednesday vote on whether Britain should simply leave on March 29 without any deal at all.

"That's why MPs must reject this deal tomorrow".

Mr Cox said "the legal risk remains unchanged" that the United Kingdom would have "no internationally lawful means of exiting" the backstop arrangement, "save by agreement".

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks after the results of the vote on Brexit deal in Parliament in London, Britain, March 12, 2019.

MPs will vote on Tuesday night on the amended Withdrawal Agreement after it was rejected in an initial Commons vote in January.

The EU, which had warned there would be no more changes or negotiations if Parliament threw out the deal, expressed exasperation at yet another Brexit crisis.

The DUP said it would carefully analyse the Brexit deal add-ons on whether it would now back the withdrawal agreement.

It means the world's fifth largest economy could leave the European Union without a deal; there could be an extension to the March 29 divorce date which is enshrined in law; May could hold a snap election or try a third time to get her deal passed; or a another referendum on the issue is also possible.

"Today, we have agreed to them".

Conservative lawmaker Nicky Morgan said May's position will become "less and less tenable" if she suffers more defeats in parliament this week.

The defeat came after May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced changes Monday created to overcome lawmakers' concerns about provisions created to ensure the border between EU member Ireland and Britain's Northern Ireland remains open after Brexit.
