Brazil school shooting: Deadly attack in São Paulo

Brazil school shooting leaves several dead

Police and firemen work at the scene of a shooting at a school in Suzano, Sao Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil, on March 13, 2019. Five children are reportedly among the dead, as well as a school employee and a passerby.

Students at the school range in age from 11 to 18, officials said.

Anxious family members congregated outside the school alongside firefighters and security services, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

Even though Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, it is rare to see school shootings in the South American country.

Children climbed and jumped over a wall that surrounds the school building, then sprinted down streets, screaming for help, security-camera footage from homes nearby showed.

Previously, another shooting took place about 450 meters from the school, but it is not known if it is related to the massacre.

The Military Police confirmed that 10 people were dead and 10 others injured after the shooting.

Gun laws have been extremely strict in Brazil since 2003 when former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva signed measures that prevented ordinary citizens from carrying guns.

Castro entered the school a few seconds later and put a crossbow and backpack on the floor.

Police said that two adolescents wearing face masks entered the building and started shooting at about 9:30am local time.

The public school, Raul Brasil Professor, has more than 1,600 students from elementary to high school grades, teachers gathered outside said.

The wounded student could not speak. "It didn't take long until police arrived".

"I was shocked with the scenes I saw inside that school.

The teenagers were brutally murdered", São Paulo state governor João Doria said after visiting the school.
