Bolivia's Morales says Venezuela needs dialogue, not foreign meddling

26 January 2019 Venezuela Caracas Numerous demonstrators raise their hands in support of the self-proclaimed interim president Guaido at a rally of the opposition in the Venezuelan capital

Pompeo added that the United States government "remains firm in its resolve and support for the people of Venezuela and interim President Juan Guaido".

Pompeo said the diplomatic staff would continue from outside Venezuela to work for its future, help manage the flow of humanitarian assistance and support those "bravely resisting tyranny".

Bolivia's leftist President Evo Morales, a supporter of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, said on Friday that European nations should support a dialogue within the country.

A convoy was seen leaving the USA embassy in Caracas on Thursday morning and the American flag was no longer flying outside. He added, the US will resume its presence in the country "once the transition to democracy begins", though he declined to offer a specific timeline.

"Today, all USA diplomats remaining in Venezuela departed the country", he said in a statement, adding that it is "a hard moment for them".

The Venezuelan government disputed Pompeo's account, saying it had instructed the United States diplomats to leave.

Palladino also warned followers of the embattled Nicolas Maduro not to harass USA -backed leader Juan Guaido.

Pompeo tweeted earlier this week that the diplomats would be withdrawn because they had become a "constraint" on USA policy.

"Since this Monday. we have revoked 340 visas, 107 of which include visas of Maduro's former diplomats and their families", Palladino told reporters.

Washington has taken the lead in recognizing Juan Guaido, the 35-year-old Congress chief who declared himself interim president in January, calling Maduro's 2018 re-election a fraud. "It's the Maduro regime which has prevented that", he said.

Maduro blamed the blackouts on alleged sabotage engineered by the US and the Venezuelan opposition. He has also promised an investigation into Guaido for "alleged involvement in the sabotage of the Venezuelan electricity system". Guaido has declared himself interim president and demands new elections, arguing that President Nicolas Maduro's re-election a year ago was invalid. US officials and Guaido said the allegation is absurd and that government corruption and mismanagement caused the infrastructure collapse in a country already suffering hyperinflation and shortages of basic goods.
