Biden Team Considers Naming Stacey Abrams As His VP Running-mate

Former Vice President Joe Biden speaks at the Chuck Hagel Forum

The former vice president is widely expected to announce a 2020 bid in the coming weeks, the report said. After referring to himself as part of the field of presidential hopefuls, he corrected himself, saying instead that he could run.

Former US President Barack Obama stands with Georgia Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams during a campaign rally at Morehouse College on November 2, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. Biden and his aides also have reached out to donors and potential bundlers - people who volunteer to raise money on behalf of the candidate - to assess support, according to another source. After almost accidentally announcing his plans in a weekend speech, several people familiar with his plans tell CBS News that Biden has started phoning potential donors this week who can help him raise millions of dollars, fast.

While former Vice President Joe Biden may still be conflicted about running for President, world leaders at the Munich Security Conference in February had fewer qualms.

CNN reported earlier this week, meanwhile, Biden is looking to choose a running mate early in his campaign, making his meeting with Abrams more notable.

Biden is laying some groundwork to build up a strong early fundraising, according to the Wall Street Journal, which earlier reported Biden's outreach. Abrams was the first black woman to be a major party's nominee for governor. Meanwhile, The New York Times is also reporting that Abrams is being considered as an early choice for running mate, with Sen. They cited several key reasons why naming someone so soon may be problematic for him.

His April announcement would come just two months before the first scheduled debate among Democrats.

While Biden has not formally revealed if he will run for president, he has been polling as the top contender for the Democratic nomination, though his age and his race are seen as a drawback by the left wing of the party.
