49 people killed in shootings at two New Zealand mosques

A police officer patrols at a cordon near a mosque in central Christchurch New Zealand Friday

New Zealand police commissioner Mike Bush addresses the media following the mosque shooting in Christchurch, saying four people are in custody after the "unprecedented situation". Seven more were killed at the Linwood Ave mosque, three of them outside the building.

After parking, he took two guns and walked a short distance to the mosque where he opened fire.

One has been identified as a male in his late 20s has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Forty-one of those slain were at the Masjid al Noor in central Christchurch, police said.

But those who committed the acts that have shocked the nation were not on a security watch list. "Two explosive devices attached to suspects' vehicles have been found and they have been disarmed". He said they had disabled one and were in the process of disabling the second. Mark Nichols told the New Zealand Herald that he heard about five gunshots and that a worshipper returned fire with a rifle or shotgun.

- All schools in Christchurch were put on lockdown and mosques told to shut their doors.

"It is clear that this can only be described as a terrorist attack".

Meanwhile, Bangladesh cricket team's tour of New Zealand has been called off in the wake of the attack. "As you can imagine, this is requiring every police and emergency resource we have available".

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said one of the men in custody was Australian.

Ardern confirmed that one of the attackers was Australian.

It is not believed that the increased patrols are in response to any specific threat to mosques, communities or individuals in Lancashire. The manifesto was not signed.

Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie says he is "absolutely sickened" to have been name-checked by one of the New Zealand mosque attack suspects in the gunman's shocking Facebook live feed.

"We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we are enclave for extremism", Ardern said in a national address.

With the unfolding of the Christchurch shooting that has shaken up the peaceful landscape of New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made her thoughts about this horrific tragedy known. "We're also removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware", she said. Reuters was unable to confirm the authenticity of the footage.

Armed police were deployed after first receiving reports of the shootings at 1:40 p.m. Friday local time.

Speaking to CNN, witness Mohan Ibn Ibrahim said he was inside the mosque when the shooting began and that he heard the gunman "continuously shooting for ten to 15 minutes".

"It's a big mosque and there were more than 200 people inside". The gunmen came from the backside.

A Palestinian man who was in one of the mosques said he saw someone being shot in the head.

"I could not contact two of my friends who are in the mosque as well", he said.

The twisted shooter claimed to be "just a ordinary White man, 28 years old".

He said he was inspired by Norwegian shooter Anders Breivik. He said one was slightly injured.
