49 killed in New Zealand mosque shooting

Police patrol outside a mosque in Christchurch

The Bangladesh national cricket team barely missed one of the two fatal mass shootings that took place Friday in a New Zealand mosque.

A New Zealand Cricket spokesman said on Saturday Black Caps players and management were not available for comment.

"Both teams, staff and match officials are safe and the ICC fully supports the decision to cancel the Test match".

The Bangladeshi Test cricket team has been caught up in a deadly mass shooting in Christchurch, fleeing from outside a mosque where they had gone for prayers. Everyone in the team was in a state of shock, they could not say anything but it was clear that we were not in the right frame of mind to continue.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan later told reporters in Dhaka that the team would now demand better security on all of their overseas tours.

"Entire team got saved from active shooters!" tweeted Tamim Iqbal. In the end, the players survived the attack and returned to their hotel safely, however, many players witnessed the incident from their bus and could hear shooting from inside the mosque, leaving many players traumatized.

"It was very sad, what happened yesterday was very unfortunate and the worst part was we were watching all those things happening". Performance analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekaran posted: "Just escaped active shooters".

"Hearts pumping badly and panic everywhere".

Bangladesh players and management departed Christchurch on Saturday, travelling from their central city hotel to Christchurch Airport in the team bus under police escort, according to stuff.co.nz.

"I spoke to one of them shortly after, " Vllavarayen said. They ran to the dressing room where they stayed for an hour before being given the allclear to go to the hotel.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern condemned the attacks as "one of New Zealand's darkest days".

"They were just outside the mosque about to get off from the bus and go into the mosque when they heard shooting and a lot of people running out and they saw someone wounded in front of them". "It's miracle that I am alive", Srinivas Chandrasekeran, a Mumbaibased electronics and communications engineer, told Mirror from New Zealand, shuddering to recall the bloodbath at a Christchurch mosque.

Cricket teams have previously abandoned tours because of violent attacks but most had been in South Asia, including Bangladesh which Australia decided against touring in 2015 because of security fears. "I've lost count of the number of police cars, but obviously all the police on these cordons are heavily armed and trying to keep the public out of the scene, keep them safe until they know exactly what's happened here, and that they've managed to apprehend the alleged gunman", she said.

In about eight to 10 minutes, the police cordoned off the area and we took just took the back exit of the bus and rushed into the nearby park and ran towards the cricket ground.
