Windies bowler Gabriel slapped with ban for alleged homophobic comment

Nothing wrong with being gay Joe Root to Shannon Gabriel during on-field spat

The charge was announced by the ICC during play on day four of the third Test in St Lucia.

Stump mics had picked up an interaction between Gabriel and the England batsmen, which ended when Root stating that "there's nothing wrong with being gay".

"There is nothing wrong with being gay", Root can be heard telling Gabriel.

He is likely to return in time for the final match of the series.

The microphone didn't mange to pick up what Gabriel had said but he was then warned by the umpire for his language following the clash.

Although supportive of Gabriel, Cricket West Indies is understood to be comfortable with the application of the rules in this instance, provided the zero tolerance approach is applied across the board in future.

"As a player you feel you have responsibilities to uphold on the field and I stand by what I did", Root said.

Until the proceedings have concluded, the ICC say they will not comment further.

The umpires had had to settle matters down as Gabriel had a running battle with Root, who scored his 16th test century and put England in a commanding position, The Telegraph reported.

"I don't know who said what to whom.but boy do I applaud Joe Root's reaction here", Hussain said.

"It's Test cricket and (Gabriel) is an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a Test match", Root told reporters Monday.

Root himself has not publicly stated what Gabriel said to him and after the end of the third Test - which England won by 232 runs - he said he did not want to incident to overshadow the series.

'West Indies have played some fantastic cricket, they are a good bunch of guys and it would be a shame if it tarnishes what has been a good, hard-fought series.

West Indies' coach Richard Pybus said he was not aware of what transpired but promised to address the issue if anything "untoward" was said.
