Wales 'get out of jail' to beat Italy for 11th straight win

Jonathan Davies

"There are lots of things we need to improve for England", Gatland told ITV post-match.

Italy captain Sergio Parisse believes Italy can win their first Six Nations game in four years when they take on a much-changed Wales line-up at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday. That streak had started in 1907, whereas the current Welsh side could overtake them in less than a year.

"We didn't speak about the record at all this week, but we will probably talk about it before England", he said.

Gatland made 10 changes for the 26-15 success against Italy, utilising a 31-player group that took part in last week's Nice training camp.

"We've got a chance at home and there will be some atmosphere".

They last achieved 11 consecutive victories in 1910, and will bid to break the record against England at the Principality Stadium in two weeks' time.

I was very satisfied with the win. Once you are on a run like this (11 successive wins), you don't want it to go.

But he warned, "If we play like that against England it could be embarrassing".

"We were looking at the bigger picture, we wanted to (give) everyone an opportunity to be involved in the first two games", the New Zealander said.

"If that was a normal year, on reflection, maybe we wouldn't have made so many changes".

His work under the high ball nearly created a try out wide for Holmes, but, with Italy continuing to show poor discipline, he accepted another penalty chance to make it 12-0 after 29 minutes.

We didn't really get out of jail. We weren't as accurate as we could (be).

I think that's probably the best Italian performance I've seen since I've been in charge of Wales.

"The lineout was a bit concerning, we didn't have enough tempo".

Having staged a remarkable second-half comeback in France last time out, Warren Gatland's side were far from at their best again in Rome against a side whose opening loss at Scotland was a record 18th in succession in this competition.

From that point, a lot of people will look to criticise us but you have to give Italy some credit for how they played.

Davies saw a try ruled out for a knock-on but the game was effectively put to bed 10 minutes from time as Watkin gathered Gareth Anscombe's dink over the top to dot down, rendering Padovani's fine late score academic.

"They're a tough team to break down in Rome".

"I thought the back row were excellent", said Gatland. However, Navidi was moved from blindside flanker to No. 8.Jonah Holmes, taking over from George North on the right wing, and Thomas Young, replacing Justin Tipuric on the openside flank, will make their Six Nations debuts.
