VIDEO of Indonesian Police Using Snake to Torture Suspect Goes VIRAL

The Papua region of Indonesia is indicated on this map

Horrific footage has been shared online by a human rights activist which purports to show Indonesian police torturing a man by locking him in a cell with a live, two-meter-long snake while taunting and laughing at him.

The man from Western New Guinea is also seen with his hands tied behind his back, and shouting, as a snake is pushed in his face.

In an apparent effort to force the suspect into confessing that he'd stolen some mobile phones, the snake was draped over the man's shoulders and wrapped around his neck.

Throughout the interrogation, officers can be heard asking: "How many times have you stolen mobile phones!?"

Ahmad Musthofa Kamal, a spokesperson for the Papua police force, said an investigation had been launched by the internal affairs unit.

Tonny Ananda Swadaya, a police chief in Paupua's Jayawijaya region, issued a statement apologizing for the interrogation methods after details of the incident emerged.

He also defended the use of the snake, and said the animal was "tame and non-venomous", according to the BBC.

"We will work more professionally in the future", he added.

Human rights lawyer Veronica Koman said the video confirmed what some jailed Papuan activists have reported in the past.

Koman said the use of a snake is just one of the ways police and military personnel terrorize Papuan detainees as part of a racist campaign against indigenous citizens, the AP explained.

Sam Lokon, a member of the West Papua National Committee, reportedly faced similar interrogation methods after being beaten following his arrest in January.

Papua, one of Indonesia's poorest region, has seen several spasms of violence over the past year, including in December when at least 16 employees of a state-owned company - who were building bridges in a major infrastructure push for the impoverished region - were killed by separatist rebels.

The former Dutch colony, the resource-rich western part of New Guinea island, was incorporated into Indonesia after a widely criticized United Nations -backed referendum in 1969.
