US's Bolton: Iran's Islamic Revolution meant 'four decades of failure'

Hezbollah supporters hold images of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenai during celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Iranian revolution in Beirut on Fe

The leaders spoke at a rally marking 40 years since the Islamic revolution, a political quake that ended millennia of monarchy and still reverberates around the region.

Prices of basic foodstuffs, particularly meat, have soared since President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal past year and reimposed economic sanctions.

"The presence of people today on the streets all over Islamic Iran. means that the enemy will never reach its evil objectives", a defiant President Hassan Rouhani told those thronging Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square, decrying a "conspiracy" involving Washington.

Iranians burn flags of the United States during commemorations of the 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution in the capital Tehran on February 11, 2019. "The U.S. will support the will of the Iranian people, & stand behind them to ensure their voices are heard".

The state has played up this year's anniversary as 40 is symbolic of maturity in the Islamic tradition and the age at which Prophet Mohammed received revelations from God.

The United States and its Arab allies have viewed Iran with great suspicion since the Islamic Revolution swept the Shah from power in 1979, fearing Khomeini's radical ideology would inspire Islamic militants across the Middle East.

Iran even holds an annual "Death to America" rally every November to commemorate the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, leading to a 444-day hostage crisis in which the Iranian regime held 52 Americans prisoner.

He vowed to boost Iran's military and ballistic missile program.

Yadollah Javani, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' deputy head for political affairs, said Iran would demolish cities in Israel if the United States attacked.

He said, "We will not let America become victorious.Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties but we will overcome the problems by helping each other".

"The United States does not have the courage to fire a single bullet at us despite all its defensive and military assets. But if they attack us, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", Javani was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA, according to Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to respond saying later on Monday it would mark Iran's last revolution anniversary if it attacked any cities in Israel.

"If this regime makes the terrible mistake of trying to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa, it will not succeed", the Israeli leader said. "They should take this into account", Netanyahu said in a warning to his country's archfoe.

That April, the Islamic Republic of Iran was proclaimed following a referendum.

Some Iranians criticise their leaders for what they say are foreign adventures which squander funds.

Today, Iran enjoys growing influence through proxies in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, raising concerns in Sunni Saudi Arabia, which accuses its rival of trying to dominate the Middle East. Tehran denies that.
