USA could face new trade battle over vehicle tariffs

EU vows 'swift' riposte to threatened US auto tariffs

"Today, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross formally submitted to President Donald J. Trump the results of the Department of Commerce's investigation into the effect of imports of automobiles and automobile parts on the national security of the United States", a Commerce Department statement issued late Sunday said. The disclosure of the submission came less than two hours before the end of a 270-day deadline.

As the White House received the report, the industry unleashed what is expected to be a massive lobbying campaign against it.

President Donald Trump invoked the rarely used statute to impose steel and aluminum tariffs past year. During a campaign rally in West Virginia past year, President Trump told the crowd: "We're going to put a 25 percent tax on every vehicle that comes into the United States from the European Union".

The Commerce Department started its investigation in May 2018 at Trump's request.

Mr Juncker has said the European Union would not be opposed to an extension of Article 50.

The Commerce Department began its investigation past year under the same law used to impose higher tariffs on steel and aluminum. The bloc retaliated imposing duties on 2.8 billion euros of USA imports, ranging from Harley-Davidson Inc. motorcycles to Levi Strauss & Co. jeans.

Some Republican lawmakers have also said they share the industry's concerns.

"I love tariffs, but I also love them to negotiate", he said.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference over the weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, "If we're serious about the transatlantic partnership, it's not very easy for me as German chancellor to read.that the American Department of Commerce apparently considers German and European cars to be a threat to the national security of the United States of America, "Politico reported".

She noted that German automaker BMW's biggest plant is in South Carolina Merkel said if the cars produced there "are suddenly a threat to the United States' national security, that startles us".

Canada and Mexico each won duty-free access to 2.6 million vehicles as part of a new North American free trade deal even if the administration moves ahead with the tariffs.
