United States to ISIS bride: You are not a citizen and deserve nothing

Hassan Shibly attorney for Hoda Muthana the Alabama woman who left home to join the Islamic State group in Syria speaks during a news conference Wednesday Feb. 20 2019 in Tampa Fla

Muthana, raised in a strict household in Hoover, Alabama, said she was brainwashed by social media messages and headed to Syria without her parents' knowledge in 2014. "We continue to strongly advise all United States citizens not to travel to Syria", Pompeo said.

"I have instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and he fully agrees, not to allow Hoda Muthana back into the Country!" the president tweeted Wednesday afternoon. "She does not have any legal basis, no valid US passport, no right to a passport, nor any visa to travel to the United States".

The announcement came a day after Britain said that it was stripping the citizenship of Shamima Begum, a 19-year-old who left the country in 2015 with two friends to join the Islamic State and recently gave birth in a refugee camp.

Hassan Shibly, a lawyer for Muthana, said it was disappointing that USA officials had not interviewed her.

But it could be because Muthana's father was a diplomat, something her legal representative, Hassan Shibly, acknowledged Wednesday.

Muthana now has an 18-month-old son from one of her ISIS marriages.

Muthana says she applied for and received a United States passport before leaving for Turkey.

In 2011, President Barack Obama ordered drone strikes that killed two Americans in Yemen - prominent Al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al-Awlaki and his 16-year-old son - but did not believe it was possible to revoke citizenship.

The decision also sets a serious precedent and possible legal challenges as it's generally hard to lose USA citizenship.

"I'm a normal human being who has been manipulated", she told ABC. The official would not elaborate but said Pompeo's statement was based on the lawyers' conclusions.

"It's because they're claiming her dad was a diplomat and the argument is that children of diplomats even if they're born in the United States are not citizens". And under USA law, a person born to a foreign diplomat is "not subject to the jurisdiction" of US law, though individuals who fall into this category may be considered permanent residents at birth and are also eligible for green cards. She told The Guardian in an interview that her last four years with the terrorist group have been a traumatizing experience where "we starved and we literally ate grass". During the height of the self-declared caliphate, Muthana posted tweets calling for violence, according to the Program on Extremism at the George Washington University. Trump demands that the European Union put the 800+ ISIS combatants on trial or else the USA will be forced to release them.

"If you are trying to make the case that others should take back their people, it stands to reason that you would do that, too", he said.

"During my years in Syria I would see and experience a way of life and the bad effects of war which changed me".

In the letter, Muthana wrote that she didn't understand the importance of freedoms provided by the United States at the time. He maintained that Muthana is a US citizen and accused the Trump administration of attempting to "wrongfully strip citizens of their citizenship".

Asked if she should be held accountable for her actions, Muthana suggested she should get therapy and is willing to speak out against radical Islam.

State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said Tuesday that he could not discuss her particular case, but said that for any ISIS members in Syria, the department's policy, "in this regard, would be to repatriate them - and that's what we call on all countries to do". "Now I'm changed. Now I'm a mother and I have none of the ideology and hopefully everyone will see it when I come back", she told ABC.

Reeves reported from Birmingham, Alabama.
