United Kingdom and French backpackers, aged 20, missing from Australian beach

Englishman Hugo Palmer and Erwan Ferrieux from France

Police have launched the search for Mr Palmer, 20, and his French companion Erwan Ferrieux, after items belonging to the pair were discovered at Shelly Beach, on the New South Wales coast north of Sydney.

Police also found their travel documents in a silver rental vehicle parked nearby.

A British tourist has gone missing from a popular beach in Australia alongside his French companion.

New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) said: "A search continues this morning for two overseas tourists missing at Shelley Beach, near Port Macquarie".

Two young backpackers have vanished after leaving their belongings on a beach and swimming in rough seas close to where 20 bull sharks were later seen.

A police spokesman said there has been no sign of the pair so far, and the search will commence again on Wednesday morning if they aren't found by sundown Tuesday.

Mr Ferrieux has a tanned complexion, dark hair, brown eyes and is between 175 and 180 centimetres tall.

Police have not yet disclosed how long Mr Palmer and Mr Ferrieux had been in Australia for.
