Turkey building collapse death toll rises to 17

In August Turkey’s emergency management agency AFAD warned that up to 30,000 people could be killed in Istanbul if a magnitude-7.5 earthquake were to hit the city of 15 million

The residential building, in the Kartal district on the Asian side of the city, collapsed on Wednesday.

Turkish officials blamed illegal construction practices for the collapse of an apartment building in Istanbul as they joined hundreds of mourners Saturday at a funeral for nine members of one family killed in the disaster.

He said the government would take "steps in a determined way" after investigators complete their work.

Earlier on Friday, a government minister said 14 had been injured but Koca said that one individual had been discharged from a hospital. He said rescuers had reached another person under the rubble, who was thought to be dead.

The death toll from the collapse of an apartment building in Istanbul rose to 21 on February 9, as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said authorities have "lessons to learn" from the incident.

After the prosecutor's office said it was looking into the cause of the incident, Turkish television stations immediately ended their live broadcasts from the scene.

The collapse fuelled criticism of a government amnesty granted previous year to people accused of building illegally - a measure announced before municipal elections this March.

Turkish cities have grown massively under Erdogan's 15 years in power. Chief Doctor Recep Demirhan says that two are in very serious condition, according to Turkey's official Anadolu news agency.

Rescue workers remain at the site and it is unclear how many more people are missing. The building had 14 apartments with 43 people registered as residents.
