Trump urges Europe to 'take back' Daesh terrorists

As Islamic State’s caliphate withers the fate of its foreign-born members looms over European nations

Trump stunned allies in December when he announced all 2,000 U.S. troops would withdraw from Syria as IS had already been defeated.

Despite the projectiles being fired, the mood among the fighters at this base is easygoing.

The SDF has warned that they may not be able to hold IS fighters after the departure of US forces, which was ordered by the Trump administration last December.

"The situation is great".

On Sunday, the US envoy to Syria, Jim Jeffey, was asked to respond to Le Drian's comments and said USA policy goals have been consistent: The enduring defeat of the Islamic State, a United Nations -brokered political solution in Syria, the removal of foreign forces.

Clashes continue inside the village of Baghouz, mostly at night. Artillery rounds were meant to clear land mines for the SDF fighters to advance.

After years of fighting IS, the SDF hold hundreds of foreigners accused of fighting for the group, and well as related women and children.

"Very soon bring good news to the whole world", he said in an apparent reference to an announcement about the defeat of the extremists in Syria.

On Monday, EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels to discuss the war-torn country, after appeals for a "European solution" to the hundreds of foreigners - including from Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Canada and Italy - who have been arrested by the SDF for allegedly fighting with IS.

Trump on Friday promised announcements linked to "the eradication of the caliphate" within 24 hours, but a top SDF commander then warned the battle would take a few more days. At least two airstrikes and mortar rounds were seen in the distance, close to the tiny area where the militants are said to be holed up.

He said the USA does not want to watch as Daesh terrorists "permeate Europe, which is where they are expected to go".

The SDF declared the final push to capture the village a week ago after more than 20,000 civilians, many of them the wives and families of foreign fighters, were evacuated.

He says the discovery has blunted the offensive.

SDF commanders say their fighters have faced explosives-laden motorcycles, suicide bombers, and ambushes from behind the front line in recent days.

"We are dealing with this small pocket with patience and caution".

Their area of control is really squeezed and they don't have as many walkie-talkies to communicate, reports said.

Allies have been alarmed by the Trump administration's decision to withdraw US troops.

He told Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "Usually I disagree with Donald Trump, but on this occasion I think he's right". In Munich, America's top general went hat in hand to ask for more troops while the United States seeks to draw down its 2,000 boots on the ground.

A fighter with the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces sits atop a US-supplied military vehicle during an operation to expel Islamic State group (IS) jihadists from the Baghouz area in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor on February 14, 2019.

Beyond Baghouz, Daesh still has thousands of fighters and sleeper cells scattered across several countries.

It has also claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in swathes of northeast Syria held by the SDF, including one last month that killed four Americans.

IS lost most of its territory in 2017 after separate military campaigns by the SDF and the Iraqi and Syrian governments.

The IS fighters are being held by the Kurdish-led forces. Despite being on the brink of territorial defeat, the group remains a danger, he said.

"Any area with a river running through it is lovely, but anywhere that Daesh goes is ruined", said Hasakeh, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

For this, "we need judicial information, and this is not yet the case", he said.
