Trump Supporter Attacks BBC Cameraman at Texas Rally

WATCH: BBC cameraman attacked at Trump rally

A BBC cameraman has been "violently attacked" at a Donald Trump rally by a MAGA hat-wearing supporter of the US President.

According to a BBC reporter covering the rally, the attack happened after President Trump had launched heavy criticism towards the news media.

The BBC's Washington news editor, Eleanor Montague, said Trump had whipped the crowd "into a frenzy against the media" prior to the attack.

Mere minutes later, Trump brought attention to the press in the room, jeering at them and eliciting boos from the crowd.

The American president has a strained relationship with the media, and has often branded reporting as "fake news" and stated that journalists are "the true enemy of the people". "Fortunately our cameraman is fine, he is made of stern stuff", Mr O'Donoghue told the Today programme.

Mr Skeans said the man nearly knocked him and his camera over twice before he was wrestled away by a blogger.

A Trump campaign official later suggested the assailant was drunk, and Trump reportedly gave Skeans a thumbs-up signal, and then continued his speech after the cameraman returned the gesture.

Gary O'Donoghue of BBC's Washington correspondent posted the video recorded by Skeans to Twitter (seen below).

"This is a constant feature of these rallies - a goading of the crowds against the media", O'Donoghue added.

'I have been spat at before, they hurl abuse at American colleagues in particular'.

Last year, United Nations experts warned that Mr Trump's "strategic" rhetoric against the media "increases the risk of journalists being targeted with violence".

Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in El Paso, Texas.

There were no reports of injuries following the attack and the BBC reporter tweeted that her cameraman was fine.

Mr Trump's "Finish the Wall" rally in El Paso was the first dueling rallies of the 2020 campaign season.
