Spotify Will Begin Banning Accounts Using Ad Blockers

Spotify Terminator

Popular music-streaming platform Spotify has updated its terms and conditions policy, and as part of it, it will block users' accounts if a user is found using ad blockers. Spotify's new Terms of Service policy have been updated this week with a new rule that forbids ad blockers or any other method of blocking advertisements. The suspension would be revoked if they removed their ad blocker or upgraded to a Premium account, and in some cases where the problem persisted, Spotify would terminate the account for good. Rather, cheating free users who get caught will simply immediately lose their account with no way to get it back.

It's not clear under what circumstances the company will outright give the boot users for blocking ads, or whether it plans to issue warnings ahead of taking such an extreme measure. One item in particular states that "circumventing and blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service" is not permitted. Unfortunately, more than 2 million users (2 percent of free Spotify subscribers) were blocking ads with modded apps and accounts previous year, The Verge reports.

An eMarketer report past year said that a quarter of USA internet users, or about 70 million people, deploy ad blockers. It also offers an ad-free music subscription for $10 a month that serves 96 million people. "The format is really evolving and while podcasting is still a relatively small business today, I see incredible growth potential for the space and for Spotify in particular".
