Skype can now blur your background with a click on desktop

Skype background blur made possible with AI

Microsoft has added a new feature to its chat service that might mitigate situations like those, and others: A background blur that relies on artificial intelligence to focus on the caller, to the exclusion of what's around them.

To turn this on, all you need to do is hover over the video button.

There are plenty of life's moments that can get in the way of you being the focus in every video call-and that's why we're introducing background blur in Skype video calls.

The feature first appeared in Microsoft Teams, but is now available more widely and uses a simple key toggle, right-click or menu click to bring in the AI-powered fuzz. The feature can also be set as the default for all of your video calls through Skype's settings.

This new Skype feature is now available only for most desktops and laptops, which means it will work without additional specialized hardware. its arrival comes at a curious time shortly after it was revealed that Google was also working on some form of depth detection for its Duo video chat app.

Have to attend an interview call but your room is in a mess?

"[Background blur] takes the stress out of turning on your video and puts the focus where it belongs-on you", explains Skype.

The feature is similar to the background blur which was introduced in Microsoft Teams in September a year ago. "This technology is also trained to detect your hair, hands, and arms, making a call with background blur just as relaxed and easy as a regular video call". Alternatively, you can enable it through Skype's settings to ensure an always blurred background.
