Renault unveil 2019 season challenger

Renault

Renault is targeting podiums with the R.S.19 this season after launching its 2019 vehicle and livery.

Renault aims to close the gap to Formula One's top three teams this season, and keep the smile on new recruit Daniel Ricciardo's face, after seeing a big step up in engine performance.

The manufacturer's ambition was nonetheless underlined last summer when it acquired the services of Daniel Ricciardo on a two-year deal, with the seven-time Grand Prix victor joining Nico Hulkenberg.

Stoll's comments were echoed by managing director Cyril Abiteboul, who says Renault is now in a position to deliver performance for drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo after a number of rebuilding years.

The French company finished fourth last season, after coming ninth in the first year of their return in 2016 and sixth in 2017.

"If I have one thing to share with you it is for you to get convinced that we are a real contender for the podium, and this is our ambition", Stoll said during the launch at Enstone. We know that it will take a bit of time, so what will happen next?

But Renault's solid line-up will be sparing no effort to reduce the yellow squad's gap with Formula 1's trio of front-runners, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Abiteboul added: "We have the drivers".

If long-term targets remained unchanged - podiums next year, and wins in 2021 before a championship challenge - there was quiet confidence at the former champions' expanded Enstone factory.

Renault has taken the covers off the auto it will contend the 2019 season with.

Renault said there had been substantial progress on the engine, a weakness in recent years. "We are aiming for zero DNFs (non finishes) related to either the chassis or the engine".

"We have worked hard on the ERS [energy recovery system] and worked a lot on the ICE [internal combustion engine]".
