Rapper 21 Savage released from immigration custody

Recording artist 21 Savage attends the 2018 Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena

After almost two weeks in custody, 21 Savage has been released on bond pending a deportation hearing, according to TMZ.

On Tuesday, 21 Savage's lawyers also passed on a message to the young rapper's fans, saying that while he was not at Sunday's Grammys Awards - "he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world". "And he asks for your hearts and minds to be with them", the statement concluded, signed by Charles Kuck, Dina Laporte, and Alex Spiro.

The rapper, known legally as She-yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, entered the United States illegally in 2005 and stayed in the country after his nonimmigrant visa expired a year later, according to ICE officials.

His lawyers confirmed ICE's claims about him being an illegal immigrant, but 21 Savage was "left without legal status" and it wasn't his fault.

Ludwig Goransson, a Swedish record producer, shouted out to 21 Savage while accepting the award for Record Of The Year at the Grammys for "This Is America", from Childish Gambino. That application is pending, his attorneys said. He has said the "21" in his name is a reference to a street gang in Decatur, and his songs often refer to his past in East Atlanta's Zone 6.

While chatting with Seth Rogen for an Interview magazine feature, the "Whole Lot" rapper said that while recovering from his injuries, he spent a lot of time in the studio. His second solo album "I Am I Was", released in December, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He was convicted on felony drug charges in October 2014 in Fulton County, Georgia, ICE said. In 2017, his studio debut "Issa" hit No. 2 on the rap charts.
