Pot smokers find tiger in abandoned home

HIGH? A smoker walked into an abandoned house and found a tiger

The garage was being secured with a screwdriver and nylon strap. But several packages of meat were found with the animal, KTRK reported.

"A concerned citizen called 311". After hearing something inside the house, Cottingham said they called police to get a warrant and later discovered the big cat. "They saw a tiger in this building, this vacant house that's obviously been abandoned for some time", said Sergeant Jason Alderete of Houston Police.

The tipster said they were at the house to smoke marijuana and thought they were hallucinating when they first saw the tiger, according to police.

Some tigers are smuggled into the USA from Mexico, and there are small pockets of breeding facilities across the country. An investigation remains ongoing. "So it was important that we get it out of that situation", Lara Cottingham, with the city of Houston, told the NBC Houston. "She was thirsty and wasn't especially threatening [but] they did tranquilize her just before they transported her".

Houston Zoo said in a statement that it would not be able to take the tiger.

Cottingham said a wildlife refuge can take the female tiger, but not until Tuesday, so it will be spending the night at the BARC shelter "safely secured from our other animals".

"The Houston Zoo is home to two Malayan tigers, Berani and Satu, and does not have capacity to receive additional tigers. More often than not it gets big, it gets expensive, it gets risky, and they end up turning the animal in or abandoning it".

"Fewer than 3,500 tigers of all tiger subspecies remain in the wild today, according to the Tiger Conservation Campaign".
