Mexican drug cartel leader El Chapo found guilty, faces life in prison

Joaquín Guzmán, the feared Mexican drug lord known worldwide as "El Chapo", has been found guilty of 10 charges in his NY trial.

"The panel spent more than five days mulling the drug lord's fate before convicting him on charges of operating a continuing criminal enterprise, use of firearms and various charges of conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine, heroin and marijuana", writes the New York Post.

One of the major figures in Mexican drug wars that have roiled the country since 2006, Guzman was extradited to the United States for trial in 2017 after he was arrested in Mexico the year before.

Reporters said that El Chapo and his wife, Emma Colonel, didn't show any emotions while the jury read the verdict but afterward, Chapo looked at her and waved.

Guzman faced a drumbeat of drug-trafficking and conspiracy convictions that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security USA prison selected to thwart another one of the breakouts that embarrassed his native country.

The criminal trial against the Mexican druglord included 200 hours of testimony that detailed drug trafficking, weapons encrusted in diamonds and gold, as well as an alleged $100M payment to the former president of Mexico.

Convicted by a jury of eight women and four men, he could face life in a US maximum-security federal prison. He is set to be sentenced on June 25.

Guzman's wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, leaves Brooklyn federal court on January 17 after attending the trial.

In closing arguments, defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman urged the jury not to believe government witnesses who "lie, steal, cheat, deal drugs and kill people". After he was recaptured in 2016, he was extradited to the U.S. to face American federal charges.
