Meghan Markle being ‘vilified’ by press like Diana, says Clooney

George Clooney says Meghan being harassed just like Diana

"The impact it was having on her that we would then see and feel was very hard to understand", William said in the documentary.

Clooney, who attended Meghan and Harry's wedding a year ago alongside his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, said he had seen the recent coverage about the Duchess's supposed letter.

Clooney specifically pointed out the publication of the letter between Meghan and her estranged father, Thomas Markle, that was published by the Mail on Sunday.

Clooney, 57, said history was repeating itself in the case of Meghan and Diana, warning "we've seen how that ends". "It's not nice to talk badly about someone else just because you can, as he or she takes advantage of the anonymity of the web".

Despite previous reports of his close relationship with the Royal couple, Clooney went on to dismiss suggestions he could be godfather to their unborn child.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have now been happily married for almost nine years, after they tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in April 2011.

Just days before his daughter was due to marry into the royal family, Mr Markle was caught staging paparazzi photos of himself. "She's getting a raw deal there, it's irresponsible. We've been told that numerous times by people that know that that was the case".

Five unnamed friends of the duchess spoke to People in an effort to counter the "global bullying" directed at her.

They also expressed their concerns for Meghan and her unborn baby.

Meghan, who was wearing a white Calvin Klein dress and a white Amanda Wakeley coat, held hands with Harry as she entered the museum where she was greeted with flowers given by 12-year-old Sage Saunders.

Reportedly written after her wedding, the letter accuses Thomas of "breaking her heart into a million pieces" before pleading with him to stop lying and speaking to tabloid newspapers without first trying to speak to her.

In the letter to her father, Meghan begged him to stop "victimising her".

She later added: "He did try to contact her she was the one who ignored him and all of us".
