Miller-Heidke, wearing a silver dress and a shiny headpiece, performed her operatic pop song "Zero Gravity", which is about overcoming postnatal depression.

"This has been a peak experience already, and I'm dying with excitement at what's to come", she said. Electric Fields delivered a stellar performance, and came so close, but it was Kate's night.

Rice, who was voted into the finals of You Decide by judges Rylan Clark-Neal, Mollie King and Martin Humes, will automatically be put through to the finals of Eurovision as the United Kingdom are part of the big five - meaning that they are one of few countries that don't have to compete in the semi-finals.

Fans said they feel the song could be a victor at Eurovision in May. "The road to Eurovision 2019 has begun!"

Ireland has won the most Eurovision finals, with seven wins.

Jessica Mauboy performed at the event in 2014 as an interval act.

Forty-two nations will compete in the Eurovision final on May 18 in Tel Aviv, with Israel hosting the competition following the victory of Israeli singer Netta Barzilai and her song, Toy, last year.

The three previous Australian entrants all finished in the top 10, with Dami Im finishing second in 2016.
