Kamala Harris 'sad, frustrated and disappointed' over Jussie Smollett arrest

Chicago's top cop blasts Jussie Smollett; bond set at $100,000

In a statement released Thursday after Smollett's arrest, the senator wrote that "hate crimes are on the rise in America", and said, "Part of the tragedy of this situation is that it distracts from that truth, and has been seized by some who would like to dismiss and downplay the very real problems that we must address".

The two brothers however told a local radio station, that they are "not racist", nor are they "homophobic".

Investigators believe Smollett staged the attack "because he was dissatisfied with his salary", Johnson said, citing information that the Osundairos gave to police.

The bond proffer issued by prosecutors in the Cook County State Attorney's office, Abel and Jussie formed a friendship after they met on the set of Empire in 2017.

The black and gay star said he was attacked by two men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs, but police say that's not what happened.

"To hear that he just made it up is just so frustrating and angering and disappointing because I feel like he was just a voice for people like me and to hear that he abused his power to advance his career and maybe a little pay is just sickening", Isaiah Nixon said.

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is also running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, tweeted Thursday, "If it is proven that Smollett fabricated a hoax, then he will have done a bad disservice to actual victims and future victims of hate crimes".

"Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle that has no place in the American legal system", the statement begins.

Smollett has maintained that he is a victim and again denied all the allegations via his attorney on Thursday. He castigated Smollett for putting the national spotlight on Chicago for something "that is both egregious and untrue", and said bogus police reports harm legitimate victims by wasting valuable police resources. "Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense". "Their first statement-they exclusively said that, said they're investigating it as a victim case", Stafford said on MSNBC.

". Empire actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career".

"When anyone makes false claims to police, it not only diverts resources away from serious investigations but it makes it more hard for other victims of crime to come forward", Harris wrote on Twitter.

Police also confirmed that the FBI was investigating a threatening letter sent on January 22 to Smollett at the "Empire" set in Chicago, where the Fox drama is filmed.

"We understand the seriousness of this matter and we respect the legal process", they said in a statement to CNN on Thursday. The felony charge means that Smollett could face up to three years in prison.

Smollett is due back in court March 14 when he is expected to enter his plea.
