Atlanta Hawks guard Jeremy Lin is finalizing a contract buyout, clearing the way for him to sign with the Toronto Raptors, his agents told ESPN.

Lin was effective as a backup and mentor to Hawks' first-round pick Trae Young. After missing all but one game of the 2017-18 season with a ruptured patella tendon, Lin has averaged 10.7 points in 19.7 minutes per game.

Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet will miss at least three weeks with a left thumb injury, the team says.

The Hawks announced Monday they have waived veteran guard Jeremy Lin. The Air Canada Centre fans, many of whom were there to witness the so-called Linsanity, erupted in a mix of disbelief and delirium.

The Raptors were expected to be active in the buyout market after losing four players, while bringing back only Marc Gasol, on trade deadline day.

Lin has averaged 11.8 points in 457 career games.

Lin, 30, will need to clear waivers first, something that should be a foregone conclusion given he's set to make $12.5 million this season.
