'I have never been abused' says detained Uighur Abdurehim Heyit

Uighur musician 'tortured to death in China camp', campaigners claim

However, China responded on Sunday by releasing a video of Heyit which seemed to show him in good health, suggesting that reports of the poet's death may have been exaggerated.

At a regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying declared that the video proved Heyit was alive and that the Turkish government had made an "extremely irresponsible" mistake that it should retract and apologize for.

China's embassy asked Turkey to withdraw its "false accusations", calling Mr Aksoy's comments "completely unacceptable".

"I saw his video online yesterday, showing that he is not only alive but also very healthy", Hua said.

In a statement Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said it's "no longer a secret" that China has arbitrarily detained more than a million Uighurs in "concentration camps".

Turkey calls on other countries and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take steps to end the "humanitarian tragedy" in Xinjiang, Aksoy said.

"For too long Uighurs and other Muslims have suffered gross repression at the hands of Chinese authorities", said Dolkun Isa, President of the World Uighur Congress.

"Turkey's Foreign Ministry calls on China to respect fundamental human rights of Uighur Turks and shut down concentration camps", the MFA further noted.

Worldwide rights groups say China routinely coerces detainees into making videotaped confessions which are then broadcast through state media to serve the government's propaganda objectives.

"My name is Abdurehim Heyit".

"Today is February 10, 2019", he said, haltingly.

The musician says he is "in the process of being investigated for allegedly violating national laws".

Wearing a black and white sweater over a collared shirt, he said he was in "good health" and has "never been abused", according to the subtitles.

Reuters was unable to independently confirm the authenticity of the video.

"It is an indisputable fact that the Chinese Government attaches great importance to safeguarding basic rights of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang", the spokesperson said.

Xinjiang has come under intensifying police surveillance in recent years following repeated riots, bombings and attacks on Chinese security forces and civilians.

After months of denying their existence, Chinese authorities under increasing outside pressure acknowledged the system of camps, terming them vocational training centers.

But critics say China is seeking to assimilate Xinjiang's minority population and suppress religious and cultural practices that conflict with Communist ideology and the dominant Han culture.

He added the Uighurs are being subjected to "torture and political brainwashing in internment camps and prisons".
