Huawei warns it could take 5 years to address United Kingdom security concerns

Huawei proposes to construct a new cybersecurity center in Poland

Chinese tech giant Huawei has warned it could take five years to resolve British security fears about its devices.

"Modern communications networks are complex systems that keep evolving in new and innovative ways", he wrote, adding that the fix process was like "replacing components on a high-speed train in motion".

"Enhancing our software engineering capabilities is like replacing components on a high-speed train in motion", CEO of the Huawei carrier business group Ryan Ding told the UK Parliament's Science and Technology Select Committee in a letter last week, according to Reuters.

"It is a complicated and involved process, and will take at least three to five years to see tangible results".

Following allegations made by the United States government, officials from around the world have been omitting Huawei from network infrastructures in fear of surveillance.

The letter follows concerns raised previous year by the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) in its annual report. He urged European countries to pick Finnish and other Scandinavian companies for their 5G contracts, citing a Chinese law that allegedly compels any private company in the country to cooperate with the government "on any intelligence matters in secret and without refusal".

Relations between the United States and China worsened amid a current trade war between the countries since Trump announced last June that $50 billion worth of Chinese goods would be subject to 25 percent tariffs in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. "Were Huawei ever to engage in malicious behaviour, it would not go unnoticed - and it would certainly destroy our business".

A spokesman from the National Security Council advised that the U.S.is "working across government and with our allies and like-minded partners to mitigate risk in the deployment of 5G and other communications infrastructure". We choose to ensure security.

Given that Huawei's primary headquarters is based in the authoritarian state of China, global government bodies fear that the smartphone and networking company could be forced to implement backdoor access in its equipment that would facilitate espionage efforts.

He said that while some countries - including New Zealand, Australia and the USA - had "indeed taken measures to restrict Huawei business activities", some of the restrictions had been "exaggerated or even misinterpreted by the media". It also recently hit Huawei and its chief financial officer with charges of bank fraud, obstruction of justice and intellectual property theft.
