Huawei vows United States 'can't crush us'

Huawei CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei says the company may downsize to weather the intense scrutiny by the US

"I object to what the USA has done", Ren said, during an interview with the BBC on Tuesday.

Mr. Ren's comments regard recent USA governmental actions against Huawei, which include criminal charges both corporate and personal: Ren's daughter, Meng Wanzhou, is Huawei's CFO, and she was arrested in December in Canada at the request of the United States.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her country's security services have not made a final decision on whether to allow telecoms provider Spark to use Huawei equipment in building its 5G networks.

Ren said Huawei may reallocate investments it had planned for the the United Kingdom.

"Even if they persuade more countries not to use us temporarily, we can always downsize and become smaller". But the U.K.'s National Cyber Security Centre has reportedly found that any potential threat posed by Huawei equipment can be managed.

'There's no way the U.S. can crush us, ' Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei says in an interview with the BBC.

"There's no impact on Huawei's business due to Meng Wanzhou's loss of freedom, in fact we're growing even faster", he said. "Because if the USA doesn't trust us, then we will shift our investment from the U.S. to the United Kingdom on an even bigger scale", Ken told the BBC. "This kind of politically motivated act is not acceptable", Ren told the BBC.

"Other nations can make the argument that if the British are confident of mitigation against national security threats then they can also reassure their publics and the United States administration that they are acting in a prudent manner to allow their telecommunications service providers to use Chinese components", an unnamed source told the newspaper.

"The US like to sanction others whenever there's an issue, they'll use such methods - we object to this."
"But now that we've gone down this path, we'll let the courts settle it".

Ren also hit back against spying allegations, saying the Chinese government previously said it wouldn't install backdoors, adding it wouldn't install them either. Ren told the BBC that Huawei "won't withdraw our investment because of this".

Huawei has repeatedly denies suggestions that it is spying on behalf of the Chinese government, insisting that it is a private company with no state ties and no interest in espionage. "If we have any such actions, then I'll shut the company down", he said. "And (for) the next 30 years to come, we will never do that".

He also confirmed that there is a Communist Party committee in Huawei, but he said this is what all companies - foreign or domestic - operating in China must have in order to abide by the law.
