Horse racing in Britain to resume Wednesday - BHA

Clerk of Ludlow Racecourse Simon Sherwood said a deep clean is under way Racing at Ludlow has been suspended Hunting has been hit by the outbreak

British racing will resume action on a "risk-managed" basis on Wednesday (13) following last week's outbreak of equine influenza.

Racing's ruling body announced a six-day shutdown of the sport last Wednesday after three horses tested positive for the highly contagious virus at the Cheshire stable of Grand National-winning trainer Donald McCain.

The BHA's statement confirmed United Kingdom racing would resume with scheduled jump fixtures on Wednesday at both the Scottish course of Musselburgh and the Plumpton track near Brighton in southern England, alongside all-weather racing at Kempton, southwest of London, and Southwell in the English Midlands.

Dunshea said: "After analysis of thousands of samples, and no further positive tests on Monday, we still only have two confirmed sites of infection".

"What we are comfortably satisfied with is that we have got sufficient measures in place to understand what has happened with the disease and how to contain and control it".

A statement read: "Analysis is ongoing at the AHT, in line with a prioritisation plan based on the potential exposure of horses to a horse that has tested positive (for example at the fixture at Ayr on February 6), or to a horse from a yard returning a positive test".

"Clearly, there is some risk associated with returning to racing".

The BHA will then review the declarations to ensure none are entered which do not meet risk criteria.

"We are finalising overnight which category individual trainers will now be placed in. The BHA will contact trainers tomorrow morning to inform them of their category and eligibility to run".

"It's great to be back racing, and we have a real treat for racegoers with a superb day of racing in prospect".

Newmarket-based trainer and veterinary surgeon James Tate admits the discovery of four cases of equine influenza in the town is a significant blow to the chances of racing resuming later this week.

"Should the decision be taken to return to racing on Wednesday, declarations for any fixtures staged will be at 10am on Tuesday".

"They say that if you go in many yard across the country and across Ireland you will find the odd horse here and there that has equine flu and we don't stop horse racing".

"As long as they can fulfil that requirement, they are fine". There is no obvious connection between Sajanjl and the four identified horses.

'All horses at Kremlin House Stables, totalling 92 boxes, undergo a strict vaccination check and programme on their arrival. At the moment the affected horses are all contained within this yard.
