Harris takes on questions about her 'blackness'

Kamala Harris' secret weapon Her sorority sisters

Elsewhere in the interview, Harris said marijuana brings "joy" which should not be denied to users.

The subject came up when Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, was asked by the hosts about rumors she opposes marijuana legalization.

Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris detailed her support for legalizing marijuana at the federal level Monday, saying that "it gives a lot of people joy".

She said she has smoked - a joint, to be specific, adding with a laugh, "I did inhale".

"It was a long time ago", she said. "I just broke news".

Sen. Kamala Harris directly confronted critics Monday who have questioned her black heritage, her record incarcerating minorities as a prosecutor and her decision to marry a white man.

"I think that gives people a lot of joy", she continued, "and we need more joy".

Perhaps this isn't much of a watershed moment on marijuana, though.

Considered by many a rising star in the Democratic Party, the junior senator from the Golden State was responding to speculation that she was against legalizing cannabis - to which she quipped on the air: "Half my family is from Jamaica". "Half my family's from Jamaica". Are you kidding me?'

Here's a quote from her campaign manager when she was running for attorney general in 2010, when Prop. 19 was on the ballot: "Spending two decades in court rooms, Harris believes that drug selling harms communities".

"This not a "but, ' it is an 'and" - and we need to research, which is one of the reasons we need to legalize it. You know, that part of the brain that develops judgment, actually begins its growth at age 18 through age 24".

Booker a year ago introduced a bill to the Senate to legalize marijuana at the federal level and gained support from other likely 2020 rivals, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders.

"Right now in this country people are being arrested, being prosecuted, and end up spending time in jail or prison all due to their use of a drug that otherwise should be considered legal", she said in a press release. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) and Sen. "Making marijuana legal at the federal level is the smart thing to do, it's the right thing to do. Today, I'm announcing my support for @CoryBooker's Marijuana Justice Act", she tweeted in May 2018.

"Harris supports the legal use of medicinal marijuana but does not support anything beyond that". Also expected to join the race is Vermont Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

As for marijuana legalization, Harris told Charlamagne Tha God that she supports it.

In an interview with KCRA-TV in August 2014, Harris is asked to respond to her opponent's stance on the issue.

But that's a significant change of her position in the last 10 years, and the show simply does not grapple with any of it, treating Harris as though she's ahead of the curve on legalization.

Nationwide support for legalizing recreational marijuana has since grown, according to an October survey released by the Pew Research Center.
