General Motors axes thousands of salaried workers Monday

Contacted by Reuters, two people familiar with the matter said GM is eliminating hundreds of jobs from the technology centers in Michigan, Arizona, Texas, and Georgia.

Canada spokeswoman Jennifer Wright says the salaried-employee reductions in Canada have mostly been accomplished already through voluntary incentivized packages.

At the time of the announced restructuring, GM had about 2,000 salaried employees in Canada as part of about 50,000 salaried workers in North America.

But on Friday a GM spokesman said the automaker had trimmed about 1,500 contract jobs, meaning about 4,000 more staff jobs will be cut, according to the Detroit Free Press. Since then, the company has cut about 1,500 contract jobs and more than 2,250 workers have taken a voluntary buyout, the report said. But 2,700 US workers will be offered jobs at other factories. The decision also involves reducing the number of executives by 25 percent in a bid to streamline the decision-making process.

GM announced the layoffs in November at the same time it also revealed it also would close four of its plants in the United States and a fifth plant in Canada. GM said in November it would end US and Canadian production of the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, Impala, the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS and CT6 sedans.

GM officials have stressed that their goal is to trim back the GM organization before it faces the next recession - with many analysts predicting that USA vehicle sales will begin at least a moderate decline this year after an unexpected upturn in 2018.

Trump has said that he let GM CEO Mary Barra have it during a telephone call in which he was "very tough".

Last month, Comprehensive Logistics said it would cease operations at its facility in Lordstown that provides logistics and warehousing, impacting about 180 jobs.
