Famed Fashion Designer Karl Lagerfeld Dies at 85

Cape Town - Chanel fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has died, according to online reports.

French celebrity online magazine Purepeople said Lagerfeld died this morning after being rushed to a hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine just outside Paris the night before.

"For the traditional greeting at the end of the show, Mr Lagerfeld, Artistic Director of Chanel, who was feeling exhausted, asked Virginie Viard, Director of the Creative Studio of the House, to represent him and greet the guests alongside the bride", Chanel explained in a previously released statement.

The German fashion mogul was known for his slick white hair and black sunglasses.

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld at an exhibition in Paris.

For the past year Karl made most of his catwalk appearances jointly with Virginie Viard, prompting discussion that Viard may take over Chanel after Lagerfeld's retirement. In January, Lagerfeld skipped his final bow at Chanel's Paris Fashion Week show, E!

The cause of his death is not yet known.
