Facebook finally rolls out life-saving 'unsend' feature on Messenger

Facebook has a bad history with privacy

The move comes after TechCrunch reported that founder Mark Zuckerberg had retracted Facebook messages from recipients - revealing that the feature existed, but was not available to all users.

The company apologized for only making the feature available to its executives, and said it would bring the feature to all Messenger users before it deleted any more of its executives' messages.

In today's world of constantly sending messages on whatever platform you've chosen, you're bound to make a mistake (or several).

If you choose the "Remove for You" option, the message will only be deleted in your chat history.

Like Messenger, there's also an option to delete messages you yourself have sent, although this has no effect on your messages received by others. Instead, it'll be replaced with text explaining that a message was removed.

Now, Facebook is implementing an undo send feature into Messenger. That also means it's still on Facebook's Messenger servers. "You're not the only one".

"Remove for You" will only delete the message from your side, so people wanting to permanently erase conversations from everyone in the chat will need to select the latter. Going all the way back to last April.

In a statement released to TechCrunch past year, Facebook representatives said, "After Sony Pictures' emails were hacked in 2014 we made a number of changes to protect our executives' communications. We did so in full compliance with our legal obligations to preserve messages".

When asked about it, Facebook confirmed Zuckerberg's messages expired over time, mainly for increased security measures after the 2014 Sony Pictures email hacks. Still, if you say something and immediately regret it, you'll be able to unsend it starting today.
