Enes Kanter agrees to join Trail Blazers

Enes Kanter

Enes Kanter #00 of the New York Knicks shoots a free throw against the Portland Trail Blazers on March 6, 2018 at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon.

NY released Kanter, 26, last week when it couldn't find a trade partner.

His agent tells ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the big man has agreed to a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers signed Kanter as a restricted free agent to a four-year, $70 million offer sheet in 2015. He appeared in 44 games. He did not travel with the New York Knicks to London for a game in January because he said he feared for his safety.

Kanter, who was born in Switzerland but is a Turkish citizen, has been openly critical of the Turkish government. And even though he's a liability on defense, he figures to immediately step into a rotation spot at backup center behind Jusuf Nurkic.

As Kanter averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in just 25.6 minutes, he headlined what is expected to be a strong buyout market.

The Knicks acquired Kanter in September of 2017 as part of the trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Adding Enes Kanter to the roster gives Portland a big man off the bench who can score in bunches and rebound the ball at a high rate.

"I look forward to helping the Blazers achieve the ultimate goal of competing for a championship", Kanter said in a statement, as he joins a team that is 33-23 and tied for fourth in the West.
