Emma Thompson leaves Skydances Luck after studio hires John Lasseter

John Lasseter

In 2017, Lasseter, who once served as chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, went on a leave of absence after admitting to sexual conduct "missteps," before leaving the company in 2018.

The Oscar-winning actor and screenwriter had already recorded parts of her vocal performance for Luck, a forthcoming animated feature being produced by Skydance Media, the film company that recently hired the controversial Lasseter.

"Emma Thompson has dropped out of the voice cast of Skydance Animation's upcoming film "Luck", a spokesperson for the actress told Variety".

When Skydance announced that they would be hiring John Lasseter to oversee their animation department last month, it raised a number of red flags.

According to a new story from The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar victor Emma Thompson had already begun recording voiceover work for "Luck", an animated feature that centers around a dispute between two different organizations: one representing good luck, and one representing bad. Thompson had been roped in to play a character in charge of a good-luck organisation.

The departure is the latest setback that Skydance has suffered in the wake of Lasseter's hiring. Thompson's rep confirmed this news to PEOPLE.

In January 2019, Lasseter was appointed to his new role with Skydance, which was met with much backlash.

Directed by Alessandro Carloni and set for release in 2021, "Luck" delves into a world about two opposing forces that control destiny and bad luck. In addition to Luck, Skydance is also working on Split, a film about a magical teenager from Linda Woolverton and Vicky Jenson, but it remains to be seen if Lasseter's hiring will have any impact on that film.
