E-cigarette use ‘skyrocketing’ among the young in the United States, says official

Number of US teens using e-cigarettes surges to 5m in one year – study

Some 3.6 million middle and high school students were current users of vaping products, up from 2.1 million the year before, according to the report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "If the current trend continues, tobacco use will cause more than eight million deaths annually by 2030 around the world".

It is hard to miss the fact that e-cigarette use - or vaping - has seen a significant rise in popularity among teenagers.

The CDC findings come from a national survey conducted last spring of more than 20,000 middle and high school students.

The proportion of high schoolers who vaped at least 20 of the past 30 days increased to 28 percent in 2018 from 20 percent the year before, the CDC added.

"The skyrocketing growth of young people's e-cigarette use over the past year threatens to erase progress made in reducing youth tobacco use", said CDC Director Robert Redfield.

The Vermont Department of Health says that 13 percent of Vermont youth e-cigarette users report that the primary reason they use these devices is because they're available in flavors that appeal to kids.

Cigarette smoking rates have stopped falling among USA kids, and health officials believe youth vaping is responsible.

E-cigarette use increased to almost 21 percent among high schoolers and 5 percent among middle schoolers in 2018, up from about 12 percent and 3 percent in 2017, respectively.

But with the introduction of e-cigarettes, the trend of nicotine uptake is not likely to slow down in the coming years. More than one in four high school students smoked or vaped within the previous month, the CDC found, and use of any tobacco product grew by almost 40 percent between 2017 and 2018.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the commissioner of the Food & Drug Administration, called the data a "sobering reminder" of the rise in e-cigarette use.

Sales of Juul, which is a high nicotine e-cigarette with vaping liquid contained in pods resembling USB devices, increased by approximately 600% during 2016-2017 and increased even further in 2018.

The findings were published February 11 in the CDC publication Vital Signs.

Earlier this month, Health Canada announced proposed new advertising rules that would restrict where ads for vaping products could be displayed to limit their visibility to young people, require health warning messages on permitted ads and restrict the display of vaping products at points of sale. Almost all tobacco product use begins during youth and young adulthood, according to the report, and the new numbers signify a reversal in recent progress to reduce overall tobacco product use among adolescents.
