Crans-Montana avalanche: Skiers BURIED at Swiss resort - desperate rescue underway

Swiss response teams rescued at least a few people among those swept up and buried in a mid-afternoon avalanche

Rescuers were searching for people with the aid of dogs and helicopters, the BBC reported.

Plaine-Morte, at an altitude of about 3,000m, is the highest ski track at Crans-Montana. It said the avalanche had covered the ski piste for 300-400 metres.

However, the avalanche risk in the region was set at only two out of five on Tuesday.

Rescue crews refused to say how many people could be buried because nobody in the disaster zone had been wearing avalanche detectors, making it impossible to know for sure.

A journalist who was at the scene posted a picture on Twitter of what appears to be the avalanche. He said the state of their injuries was not immediately known.

Philippe Magistretti, president of the resort's ski lift company, told the Reuters news agency that members of the army were among dozens at the scene.

Nicolas Féraud, mayor of Crans-Montana, told local newspaper Le Nouvelliste that between 10 and 12 people could be trapped, but emphasized that was an estimate.

"About 100 rescue workers are on the site", he said in a telephone interview.

"We are shocked and hope for a positive outcome for these people", Feraud said.

Ski resorts in Switzerland are expected to be busier than usual this week because of half-term school breaks.
