California governor to draw down National Guard troops at border

California Governor To Pull National Guard Troops From U.S.-Mexico Border: 'This Is Our Answer To The White House—No More Division'

California Governor Gavin Newsom is poised to withdraw all 360 state troops from the US-Mexico border, in an apparent rebuttal of President Donald Trump's stance that there is a national security crisis there, media said on Monday.

"This is our answer to the White House: No more division, xenophobia or nativism", Newsom plans to say in his State of the State speech that he will deliver on Tuesday morning.

In a similar move, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham last week ordered most National Guard troops deployed at the state's border with Mexico to withdraw.

We will support our neighbors where the need for assistance is great, and we will offer a helping hand when we can to those vulnerable people who arrive at our border, but New Mexico will not take part in the president's charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops. What Trump seems to have forgotten, however, is that individual states along the border have the right to pull troops if they so desire.

After initially praising Brown for agreeing to his deployment request, President Trump then criticized him for not supporting, in his words, a safe and secure border. During a recent visit to San Diego, Newsom said "we should be celebrating" migrants who seek asylum legally and contrasted California's efforts to assist them - including a $25 million outlay in his first budget proposal - with what he called Trump's disingenuous narrative "that somehow these caravans are coming in to create havoc". "And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws". The troops have remained at the border for 10 months. The federal government that month also stopped helping asylum-seeking families connect with their USA sponsors after being processed and registered at the border.

"This will not be a mission to build a new wall", Brown wrote at the time in a letter to Trump administration officials. Grisham publicly rebuked the Trump administration's immigration policies when she announced the withdrawal, something Newsom also appears primed to do.

100 troops for intelligence operations targeting drug cartels. The governor's office is separately requesting funding from the federal government to add at least 150 troops to the California National Guard's Counterdrug Task Force, according to Nathan Click, a spokesman for the governor.

Newsom said Trump's plans to deploy another 3,750 US military troops to the border was yet another reason to realign the priorities of the National Guard.
