Britain sets out global role for its armed forces post-Brexit

British Defense Chief Urges Bolstering Military Post-Brexit, Warns Russia Of 'Costs'

"Brexit has brought us to a great moment in our history when we must strengthen our global presence, enhance our lethality, and increase our mass, " Williamson said in a speech at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a London-based security think-tank.

Speaking at the Royal United Services Institute, he said Britain must stand up to those who "flout global law".

The HMS Queen Elizabeth, Britain's largest warship, is slated to head to the Pacific region, U.K. Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson said Monday.

He said the military's cyber capabilities will be reinforced to defend and launch attacks.

British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson said Russian Federation should pay a high price for its provocative behavior, as Reuters reported.

Williamson will also highlight US-UK military relations while echoing Trump's call for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries to increase their spending, citing a need to better handle what Williamson calls Russian provocations.

Mr Williamson added "state-on-state competition was reviving" through proxy wars such as operations to eliminate Islamic State and Al Qaeda in Syria and the wider Middle East where Western countries and Moscow have clashed over policy. "Ready to strengthen our resilience". "Such action from Russian Federation must come at a cost", the Minister said.

According to him, Brexit gives Britain an unparalleled opportunity to consider how we can project and maximise our influence around the world.

The defence secretary said the government is invoking a "Global Britain" mantra which must involve "action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

He said the United Kingdom would build new alliances and rekindle old ones, and shared his belief that Britain "should be the nation that people turn to when the world needs leadership".
