Brexit: Theresa May responds to Jeremy Corbyn's letter

Labour's Keir Starmer said Mrs May's approach was 'reckless' and 'blinkered'

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May will this week ask Parliament to give her more time to renegotiate her Brexit deal with the European Union, promising lawmakers a further chance to take control of the process before the clock runs out, according to officials with knowledge of her plans.

A top European Union official warned Monday (4 February) that the prospect of Britain crashing out of the bloc next month looks more likely than ever, as Prime Minister Theresa May sought to reassure foreign investors anxious about a chaotic Brexit.

Japan has sought to extract hefty concessions from Britain before Brexit, while talks with many nations have been delayed by the lack of clarity over Britain's future trading relationship with the EU.

But No 10 said it rejected any proposals to remain in a customs union with the EU.

"The argument is now about how to get out of the backstop", Mr Johnson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"I think it must be pretty obvious that if you are going to have a time limit to the backstop, and I think that would be a very good thing, it's got to fall before the next election". During his speech, Mr Johnson said: "I don't think there is any mileage for Theresa May or the Government in trying to a do a deal with Labour".

But Mr Corbyn's demand is for a customs union that gives the United Kingdom a say on future trade deals the EU might strike and is something Brussels appears unlikely to accept.

She also questioned whether the call for completely "frictionless" trade would mean reneging on Labour's commitment to end free movement by requiring single market membership.

Responding to the conditions for a Brexit deal set out by the Labour leader in a letter last week, Mrs May said she wanted the Tory and Labour teams to consider "alternative arrangements" to the Irish backstop.

Although Britain's Treasury chief Philip Hammond argued the British economy remains "fundamentally strong" and is "enjoying the longest unbroken quarterly growth streak" among the Group of Seven industrialised countries, he conceded that Brexit unease was taking its toll.

Mrs May's statement to the House of Commons is being made a day earlier than had been expected. "Mrs May also said the Tories were "prepared to commit" to new laws to protect workers" rights after Brexit - a key demand of Labour and the unions.

She'll say that if she hasn't brought them new deal by February 27, there will then be another opportunity to vote, Communities Secretary James Brokenshire confirmed in an interview.

Barnier told a news conference in Luxembourg that time was "extremely short" to conclude a deal before Britain is due to leave the bloc on March 29.

Mr Corbyn has repeatedly said there should be an election if Mrs May can not get a deal through Parliament and he has faced concerted pressure from some in his party to push for a second public vote.
