Bernie Sanders announces run for USA presidency in 2020

2020 Democrats embrace populist message

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) attends an event to introduce the Raise The Wage Act in the Rayburn Room at the U.S. Capitol January 16, 2019 in Washington, D.C. Sanders has announced that he will run for president in 2020.

"I think that the time is long overdue for the American people to tell this president he is not a dictator, he is not a king", Sanders said. "We are running against a president who is a pathological liar, a fraud, a racist, a sexist, a xenophobe, and someone who is undermining American democracy as he leads us in an authoritarian direction".

An independent and self-described democratic socialist, Sanders has consistently taken the top spots in various polls on possible and declared Democratic Party contenders in recent weeks. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Obama-era HUD Secretary Julian Castro.

Sanders confirmed his plans in an interview aired on Vermont Public Radio on Monday.

"Together, you and I and our 2016 campaign began the political revolution".

"Bernie Sanders has already won the debate in the (Democratic) primary, because every candidate is embracing his brand of socialism", Trump campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said.

Sanders pointed to the Democratic Party's leftward shift as a reason for a second run.

Over seven pages, the team outlined a strategy for winning black voters that included using social media influencers and having Mr. Sanders give a major speech on discrimination in a city like St. Louis or Cincinnati.

They are to oppose President Donald Trump, Sanders said, and to enact numerous ideas that he had championed in 2016, including universal healthcare and $15 minimum wage. The field could also grow, with a number of high-profile Democrats still considering presidential bids, including former vice president Joe Biden and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke.

Four years later, Mr Sanders' policies remain the same but much has changed on the political landscape.

In 1981, he was elected mayor of Burlington, the state's largest city, by a mere 10-vote margin and went on to win another three terms.

Before his election to the Senate in 2006, Sanders represented Vermont's at-large congressional district in the House for 16 years.

This time around, Sanders has been among the leaders in opinion polls of prospective 2020 candidates, but he faces a field more heavily populated with other liberal progressives touting numerous same ideas he brought into the party mainstream. Sanders identifies as an Independent though in 2016 he sought the nomination from the Democratic party, an received less than fulsome support from the Democratic party.
