BAFTA Takes Singer's Name Off 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Nom

Why is the history of the film Bohemian Rhapsody so controversial? Singer was sacked as the director of "Bohemian Rhapsody" three weeks before filming was complete, a move which coincided with a lawsuit filed by a Seattle man who claims Singer raped him in 2003, when he was 17-years-old.

The film-maker had been named in the outstanding British film category, but the academy said his name has been suspended from the nomination "effective immediately".

NEW YORK-Rami Malek says working with director Bryan Singer before the latter was sacked from "Bohemian Rhapsody" was "not pleasant".

In previous interviews, Malek has said he had "creative differences" with Singer. BAFTA says Wednesday that the organization considers the alleged behavior unacceptable and incompatible with its values and that Singer has been informed of the suspension. This has led to Mr. Singer's suspended nomination.

The move, which comes amid the #MeToo push-back against sexual assault in Hollywood, appears to be among the first times that a major awards nomination was withdrawn due to allegations of sexual misconduct. King and McCarten remain nominated, while Bohemian Rhapsody will also contest a further six BAFTA Awards. Singer has denied those claims as well, calling the article a "homophobic smear piece" that was "conveniently timed" to take advantage of Bohemian Rhapsody's success.

Nominees for best British film - a separate category - are Channel Islands thriller Beast, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, fashion documentary McQueen, Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan and Ollie and crime thriller You Were Never Really Here. "Something tells me it probably won then", one astute netizen observed.
