All medals for 2020 Toyko Olympics to be made from recycled waste

Medals for the 2020 Olympics will be made from recycled electronic devices, the Tokyo Organising Committee has announced.

This means that all of the 2020 Olympic medals will potentially have iPhone and Android parts in them.

"Thanks to the huge levels of support from the public and companies across Japan and from national and global athletes, it is estimated that the remaining amounts of metals required to manufacture all Olympic and Paralympic medals can be extracted from the devices already donated", Tokyo 2020 said in the press statement.

Fast-forward to its update this month, and the committee revealed that it has now hit 93.7-percent and 85.4-percent of its gold and silver targets, respectively.

Collection of the metals from discarded small devices began in April 2017.

The release from organisers confirmed that over five million mobile phones had been handed in, contributing to nearly 50,000 tons of devices.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, about 30 per cent of the silver and bronze in medals came from recycled materials. For instance, the committee collected 2,700 kg of bronze, 28.4 kg of gold and 4,100 kg of silver required for the medals from the e-waste.

The sport lost out initially in November 2018 when 14 Olympic and Paralympic sports received the first wave of shares at the launch of the £3 million pot of cash to help support their ambitions to qualify for Tokyo 2020. "The elite athletes are being looked after by a different set of professional people so that there is no bureaucracy", Rathore, an olympic silver-medallist in double-trap shooting, said.
