After delay, Apple releases a fix for FaceTime bug

iOS 12.1.4, Apple’s update that fixes the FaceTime bug, is now available to download

To make matters worse, if the person receiving the call pressed the power button to mute the ringing, their front-facing camera would turn on allowing the caller to see what was happening in the room.

Apple ran afoul of some security issues recently, after a bug within Group FaceTime was revealed to allow callers to hear a recipient's audio even before they answered the incoming call.

Originally discovered by the 14-year old Grant Thompson although it took quite a while for Apple to respond which has since attracted some attention from the authorities, the company shut down the Group FaceTime feature through a server-side implementation as a temporary measure once the news of the bug started to spread.

Apple, which has $245 billion in cash, did not disclose how much it is disclosing to Thompson's college fund or the bounty it is paying. It is likely that Apple will keep Group FaceTime disabled for devices that are running earlier versions of iOS than iOS 12.1.4, though.

In release notes for the update, Apple credits the discovery of the flaw to Grant Thompson of Catalina Foothills High School and Daven Morris of Arlington, Texas.

Although the FaceTime bug has now been addressed, its emergence is particularly embarrassing for Apple.
