Winter storm causes plane to skid off runway at Chicago airport

A United Airlines jetliner slid off the runway Saturday morning after landing at O'Hare, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Flight Aware is now showing 3180 canceled flights. Genevieve Saturday afternoon and drivers were urged to find an alternative route. The flight came into the airport from Phoenix and 129 people were on the plane.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said a ban on tractor-trailers and buses on most highways in the state will start at 3 p.m. ET Saturday.

Earlier, the system dumped up to 10 inches of snow on parts of the Midwest Saturday.

The storm prompted the cancellation of almost 1,000 flights at Chicago's airports on Saturday.

Areas where the storm had already moved out by midday faced bitter cold and strong winds.

A mix of snow and sleet will begin Saturday afternoon in NY and Philadelphia but shift to rain overnight.

Cold rain is falling on New York City through much of Sunday, and winds will begin to gust up to 40 miles per hour in the afternoon.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport reported that airlines there canceled almost 470 flights "due to overnight snow and strong winds expected throughout the day".

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories were posted by the National Weather Service from Arkansas and southern Missouri northeastward through the southern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley and into the Northeast.

A major winter storm was expected to clobber a large swath of the northern United States with heavy snow, gusty winds and frigid temperatures making travel hard and unsafe starting on Friday and through the weekend, forecasters said.

The governor of Pennsylvania declared a state of emergency on Friday, ahead of the storm, to mobilize additional resources to deal with the storm. They also said to prepare for flooding and power outages in places.

Further east, the National Weather Service in Albany, New York, said snow could fall at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour, creating "difficult to impossible travel conditions" in areas.

As of Sunday morning, it was snowing in upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Monday's forecasted temperatures in Boston will struggle to go above 11 F, while New York City will max out at 14 F.
