Windows 10 Market Share Exceeded Windows 7 in December 2018: Net Applications

Report: Windows 10 Takes Over Windows 7

While Windows 10 has been vastly more popular than Windows 8 and 8.1, the long tail now associated with the PC market and the slower pace of user upgrades have stretched out the amount of time it's taken for end-users to shift from one OS to the other.

This follows Windows 10 gaining share throughout 2018, starting the year on 34.29% - while Windows 7 started on 42.39%.

The report shows Windows 10 topping the desktop operating system share with 40.86 per cent with Windows 7 trailing at 36.37 per cent in December.

By comparison, 26.08% of users on Steam are on Windows 7 (64 bit). While that's up from 2.8 percent of machines in November when AdDuplex released a similar study, it's far below previous operating system builds. The company, however, has made efforts to push legacy devices to the newer OS.

Windows 10 comes with a built-in Administrator account which is disabled by default during setup, and it seems Microsoft hopes to keep it that way. That's as of December 2018. Microsoft has focused on creativity and productivity in Windows 10 for the past feature updates, and the company's focus will likely continue to be on productivity this year. Windows 10 usage among both groups has continued to rise steadily even after the official end of Microsoft's free update period, but gamer adoption has remained well ahead of overall market penetration. Microsoft later admitted that it would miss the target. Oh, and if you'd care to invest in the upcoming Azure-Powered Windows Virtual Desktop then those Windows 7 updates will be yours as part of the deal. The software was supposed to be an incremental upgrade for users.
